Futures Lab: Just Climate Action - 'The Great Recovery'

Vision Statement

Through a Talanoa dialogue, this lab envisions a future that crosses traditional boundaries to bring about global climate justice. We will encourage discussions between generations and genders, between regions, between employees and CEOs, and between the present, which we can celebrate and reflect upon, and a resilient, just future.

Challenges

Challenges Climate change and action are currently impacting people across the globe in unjust and disproportionate ways. As world leaders, corporations and financial institutions begin to enact climate action at the highest levels, communities and individuals, and the impacts on them, are often forgotten. It is a challenge to hear the voices of those in these marginalised communities, but impossible to create a just future without hearing these voices. The dialogue in this Futures Lab will try to highlight and amplify those at risk of injustice from both climate change and action.

• Cross-regional: Listening to unique regional distinctions can help us learn lessons for shared global opportunities and needs
• Employer and employee: Company support for effective workforce support measures can strengthen worker resilience, preparedness, and livelihoods
• Intergenerational: Transitions from current to future leaders are approaching, and will be crucial for creating a just transition
• Present and the future: Fossil fuels have given us so much, but we have to let them go justly

• Luisa Neubauer
• Luisa-Marie Neubauer is a German climate activist. She is one of the main organisers of the school strike for climate movement in Germany, where it is commonly referred to under its alternative name Fridays for Future.
• Mary Robinson (virtual)
• Mary was the first woman President of Ireland and former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; Chair of The Elders; a passionate advocate for gender equality, women’s participation in peacebuilding, human dignity and climate justice.
• Joshua Amponsem
• Joshua is an environmental activist and the founder of Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), a gender-balanced, youth-led organization which serves as a capacity building and advocacy anchor in environmental sustainability.
• Sophia Kianni
• Sophia is an American climate activist specializing in media and strategy. She is the founder and executive director of Climate Cardinals, an international youth-led nonprofit that works to translate information about climate change into over 100 languages.
• Vandana Singh (virtual)
• Vandana is an Indian science fiction writer, Climate Imagination Fellow and interdisciplinary climate educator. She is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Physics and Earth Science at Framingham State University in Massachusetts.
• Cynthia Williams
• Cynthia is the Global Director, Sustainability, Homologation and Compliance, at Ford Motor Company.
• Boitumelo Molete
• Boitumelo is the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) Social Development Policy Coordinator, holding a BA in Politics and Sociology (University of Johannesburg) as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Labour Law (University of Johannesburg).
• She works on the development of social policy for COSATU (transport, housing, health and comprehensive social security as well as climate change and the just transition, including ensuring that the strategic implementation of relevant legislation and policy by COSATU and its Affiliates is done, and lobbying for COSATU policies by negotiating at NEDLAC and other structures.
• Tommy Campbell
• Tommy is a retired Unite Scotland Regional Officer who has campaigned on behalf of workers primarily in the oil and gas and transport industries.
• Brother Phap Dung
• Brother Chân Pháp Dung was ordained on February 4th 1998 as a member of the “Apple” family at Plum Village France.
• Minister Richard Lochhead
• Richard is a Scottish National Party politician who is Minister for Just Transition, Employment and Fair Work and has been the Member of the Scottish Parliament for Moray since 2006.
